BellSouth 5 Static IP configuration using
Linksys BEFSR41 / BEFSR11 Router
This is only compatible with an Alcatel Speed Touch Home
modem as it now.
The Westell 2100 needs to be changed into "bridged" mode
to function properly with a Cable-DSL Router/Gateway.
A standard hub or switch can also be attached with more
static IP address's using the same principles.
- The machine used to configure the
router will get DHCP from the first connection with the Linksys device. Using
an Internet browser type 192.168.1.1 in the address bar. Default password is
no username and password “admin” then click “OK”.
- This will bring you to the setup
page. Change the LAN option from “192.168.1.1 to your router assigned IP
address EXAMPLE “67.16.33.2” Subnet will be “255.255.255.248” (Bellsouth will
assign you 8 IP address 1st address is not used. 2nd
address is assigned to router 3rd thru 7th address are
assigned to machine or other routers. DO NOT SELECT ANYTHING FOR “WAN” THIS
IS THE MOST COMMON MIS-CONFIGURATION. You will obtain an IP address from you
DSL Modem by way of DHCP and your username%static login it will recognize that
your static IP’s valid and allow them to be assigned
EXAMPLE:
67.16.33.1 – Used for routing tables only – NOT ASSIGNABLE
67.16.33.2 – Must be assigned to ROUTER
67.16.33.3 – first user assignable address – PC / Router for NAT or
DHCP
67.16.33.4 – second user assignable address – PC / Router for NAT or
DHCP 67.16.33.5 – third user assignable address –
PC / Router for NAT or DHCP 67.16.33.6 – fourth user assignable
address – PC / Router for NAT or DHCP 67.16.33.7 – fifth
user assignable address – PC / Router for NAT or DHCP
67.16.33.8 – broadcast address for subnet – NOT ASSIGNABLE
- Click apply at the bottom this
will disconnect you from the router.
- Now change PC used for configuring
router to your first assignable IP address.
EXAMPLE:
TCP / IP
– 67.16.33.3
SUBNET MASK –
255.255.255.248
GATEWAY –
67.16.33.2
Primary DNS –
205.152.XXX.XXX – X Depends on Location given by BellSouth
Secondary DNS –
205.152.0.5 – This is usually throughout the US but do not rely on this
information.
- Now reconnect to your router using
your router configured IP in this example it would be “67.16.33.2”
- At the bottom of the page enter
your username given by BellSouth followed by %static.(all lower case letters)
EXAMPLE: username%static. Also enter your password and select keep alive
followed by the time for reconnect desired. Click “Apply” when completed.
- Under the tab for “DHCP” disable
DHCP and specify “0” for starting address. Click “Apply” when completed.
- Click on the tab for “Advanced”
then select “Dynamic Routing”. Select “Router” instead of “Gateway”. Click
“Apply” when completed. At this point your have just turned your device from
an Internet sharing device into a true routing device.
- Now if your router does not
automatically connect, you can go to setup and then status page and select
“Connect” from there. When connected you will first discover, that you have
been given a DHCP address to the router. THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT YOU SHOULD
EXPECT. Your IP Address for the first assignable address will now be allowed
to pass through the router and it will be the public address specified. You
can also ping this IP from another machine which is not filtered or
fire-walled for public address or pinging is not allowed. Example “ping
67.16.33.3” you should see reply if this is correct.
- Configure additional machines as
specified above.
