How do I set up a BellSouth FastAccess account with the Linksys Etherfast Cable/DSL Router

A N S W E R

Note - Do not insert the cable from the modem to the Router's WAN port until specified in these instructions.

First, remove the WinPoet or EnterNet 300 software installed on your computer in order to authenticate the DSL connection. To do this, click Start, select Settings and open the Control Panel. Double click Add/Remove Programs. Select Ivasion WinPoet or EnterNet 300 and click Remove.

Next, access the Router's web based utility by typing http://192.168.1.1 into your web browser's address field. Press the Enter key.

A password window will appear.

Leave the username blank and enter the password as "admin" (all lowercase).

The following instructions are for firmware 1.37.  With the Bellsouth PPPOE service, it is recommended to use 1.37 or later.

Currently, firmware x.40.2 or x.42.7 is the optimal firmware for use with Bellsouth FastAccess.

Once in the setup page, place a mark in PPPOE at the bottom of the page.

(Your screen will not look like the screen shown below. It is included for reference.)

For the username and password, try one of the following logins. (For this example the username will be   "customer"  and the password  "*****")

username: customer
password: *****

-or-

username:  customer@bellsouth.net
password:  *****

Note - This may differ by city or region.  If one of the types of logins fails, try one of the others.

Disregard the "RAS Plan" settings. Leave this as it is.

Try selecting Connect on Demand and changing the Max Idle Time to 9999, as shown below.

Click Apply.

If that doesn't work, try selecting Keep Alive and changing the Redial Period to 180, as shown below.

Click the Apply button.

Once the settings are successful, click Continue.

Note - Now insert the cable from the modem to the Router's WAN port.

Select the Status tab at the top of the Setup page.

Beneath "Login: PPPOE", you should see the one of the following:

Status:  Disconnected
-or-
Status:  Connecting
-or-
Status:  Connected

(Your screen will not look like the screen shown below. It is included for reference.)

If the Status is Connected, close the browser and reboot your computer.

Upon reboot, the computer(s) should be able to access World Wide Web pages as well as other information from the Internet.

If the Status blinks with the word Connecting, then gives an error message, go back to the logins above and enter another style username/password into the setup page.  Refer to "How to reconnect after a PPPOE disconnection", "Unable to connect to PPPOE error", "LCP negotiation failure connecting to PPPOE server", "How to locate and clone your MAC address" in this Knowledgebase for more information.

Connect as per above if the Status shows as Disconnected.
